Lenore Nash Begins Phased Retirement
Lenore Nash, long time Library Technician in the Medical Center Library technical services area, has been approved for phased retirement. Beginning October 18, Lenore is working half-time for the next three years, after which time she will achieve full retirement from the University. Lenore began work at the Libraries in August 1992, and we are pleased she is continuing her employment with us! Lenore is the first library staff member to utilize the phased retirement benefit since it became available in 2007. For more information about phased retirement see http://www.uky.edu/HR/benefits/PhasedRetirementProc.html.
Librarians to Serve on Gen Ed Vetting Teams
We have learned from Senate Council that librarians have been added to each of the vetting teams for the General Education curriculum review to be done this fall. In some cases, the individual librarian is a full member of the team; in other the librarian has an ex officio role. This is very good news indeed. My thanks to the Faculty Council who took a quick and proactive role in stating their case for involvement and ensured that we had appropriate volunteers from which the appointees could be selected.
ARL Selects 2009-2011 Diversity Scholars
ARL has just announced its selection of Diversity Scholars. The ARL Initiative to Recruit a Diverse Workforce offers stipend funding in support of MLIS education of up to $10,000 over two years to students from underrepresented groups who are interested in careers in research libraries. The program is funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and by voluntary contributions from 52 ARL member libraries. This program reflects the commitment of ARL members to create a diverse academic and research library community that will better meet the challenges of changing demographics in higher education and the emphasis on global perspectives in the academy. One of our fellows from this summer, Anissa Ali, was selected as a recipient of this scholarship. The full press release can be found at http://www.arl.org/news/pr/diversityscholars09.shtml
