KDL Content Now Exposed in Google

From Mary Molinaro:

Since the inception of the Kentuckiana Digital Library the digital objects contained therein have not been accessible to those users doing searches in search engines such as Google. All of the content in the KDL sat in a "dark archive" (not unlike many large digital archives). In late May Eric Weig and Michael Slone began working on a method to expose the KDL content to these search engines. Working together they developed a site map that can be crawled and indexed by Google. They have developed an automated process that adds new KDL content to the searchable site map.

We have discovered over the last few months that Google is actively indexing our content now and currently shows around 190,000 pages indexed. This has spiked our statistics considerably, as you can see below [see 9-11-09 update in SharePoint for table] that our numbers started to increase in June and July’s numbers are five times greater than May. The stats for August through August 12th indicate that we will have even more visitors in August!

I think this underscores the value of having librarians and programmers working together to make our valuable content available to users. Congratulations and thanks to Eric and Michael!

Speaking Volumes Newsletter

The Libraries’ external newsletter, Speaking Volumes, is published twice a year and sent to our donors and friends. The newsletter is created by Jessica Hughes and Sharon Ross and often calls upon press releases written by our PR liaison, Whitney Hale. The PDF version of the newsletter is regularly posted on the Libraries website at http://www.uky.edu/Libraries/page.php?lweb_id=527 If you haven’t seen it lately, take a lot at the Fall and Spring 2008 issues online.

What Faculty Can Do To Help

Dean of the Graduate School and Interim Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education, Jeannine Blackwell, has sent a list of tips to all faculty and instructors of record who teach undergraduates. It has also been sent it to the advising network and to course coordinators of multi-section courses, who will share it with other graduate assistants. I’ve posted the list on our SharePoint site under Office of the Dean, Misc Documents.

UK Libraries Wins Three Awards for our Marketing Materials

Earlier this month, UK Libraries took home awards for 3 out of our 4 Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, Kentucky chapter (CASE-KY) award submissions and 2 of the awards were first prize Grand Awards. By virtue of winning our state competitions, we’re still in the competition for the CASE Region III Awards in Feb. 2009.

Congratulations to Doug Boyd for the Grand Award in CASE-KY (Audiovisual Communications) Radio Programs and Announcements for their collaboration in the oral history series. Doug collaborated with WUKY for a series about the Nunn Center for Oral History; topics have included the Bill Keightley archive project, dirty tricks in Kentucky political campaigns of yesteryear and the Frontier Nursing Program.

Congratulations to Sharon Ross and Jessica Hughes for the Grand Award for our newsletter, Speaking Volumes in the External Tabloids and Newsletters. Congratulations to Kelley Nalli and Cornett for their help in developing the template three years ago. Jessica has developed desktop publishing and photography skills that help make this an excellent publication.

Our new brochure for the UK Libraries also received a Merit Award in the Direct Mail, Brochure category.

Sharon Ross attended the meeting for the Libraries and was presented with a certificate, at the CASE-KY award program at the Mohammed Ali Center in Louisville. President Todd will receive a letter announcing the awards this week. A press release with more details is available at http://news.uky.edu/news/display_article.php?category=1&artid=4247

My thanks to Sharon and Jessica for preparing our submissions so that they could contend for these awards.

UK Archives and Collections Highlighted in Wikipedia

In an ongoing agenda to take our resources to where people are, SCDP has added links to our collections to records in Wikipedia. The first institutions to take this approach were the University of Washington and the Library of Congress. It’s very cool to see links to our rich resources in this source. Thanks, SCDP!

The Hub at the University of Kentucky

Stacey Greenwell writes: “At the University of Kentucky, we just launched a video about our information commons, the Hub. As part of a group focused on student and faculty support, the video was a collaboration between the library and the teaching and academic support center. The video takes a humorous look at what the Hub has to offer students. We worked with student actors over the summer (I paid them in vending machine snacks—which also made great props).” They have both a short (0:31) and a long (3:24) version....The Uncommon Commons, Sept. 3; blip.tv

In addition, UK PR created a video on the Young Library which can be seen at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MNe7rv7fYQ
