University Diversity Update
The University’s Diversity Update for May 2009 has been posted on the Office of the Dean SharePoint site under Diversity. Rather than a full listing of every activity within the University, selected activities have been highlighted. Page 5 highlights our recent fellowship program with ARL. Check it out!

Libraries Phonathon
As we do each year, the Libraries’ annual phonathon is set to begin on August 17th and conclude on September 3rd. Our annual giving program has grown from 219 donors giving $5,090 in FY05 to 589 donors giving $41,564 in FY09. The phonathon program is run by the University’s Development Office and includes a small army of students who call friends and potential donors asking for them to make their annual contribution to the Libraries and sharing information about the Libraries with them. If you’ve ever given to the UK Libraries, you might get a call so I wanted to alert you to this upcoming activity.
Library Associates Annual Dinner
The Library Associates Annual Dinner was held in May as usual this year. In my absence, Terry Birdwhistell presented a State of the Libraries report that I had created focused on items of interest to our donors and friends (that presentation has been loaded to the Office of the Dean SharePoint site under Dean’s Presentations). In addition, Judge Joe Lee was honored with the Medallion for Intellectual Achievement.
Library Associates President Kathy Johnson completed her term as president and welcomed incoming president, Gail Hart. In addition, we welcomed the following new members to the Executive Committee of the Library Associates:
Bess Abell
LuAnnette Butler

New ARL Investment Index Ranking
The ARL Investment Index ranking will appear later this summer in the Chronicle of Higher Education’s Almanac. This year’s ranking is the third year that ARL is using a new set of criteria and factors to formulate the ranking. The new mechanism focuses on expenditure data rather than the increasingly out of date index used previously which was very collections-centric. I will note that UK does fare better in the older index rather than the new one, but nonetheless it is the new one that now matters.
In this year’s listing, our ranking has fallen slightly. UK's rank is
- 66 among all ARL libraries
- 36 among public university libraries
This is a slight decline over last’s rank of 62 among all ARL libraries and 35 among public university libraries.

The Open Library Environment final report
With funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Open Library Environment project convened a multinational group of libraries to analyze library business processes and to define a next-generation library technology platform. The resulting OLE platform is predicated on service-oriented architecture and a community-source model of development and governance. Its draft final report (PDF file) describes a system for managing and delivering intellectual information designed by and for academic and research libraries....OLE Project, July 26

Don't Let Google Ignore Reader Privacy

Don’t let Google ignore reader privacy
Hugh D’Andrade writes: “As Google expands its Google Book Search service, adding millions of titles, it will dramatically increase the public’s access to books. But Google may be leaving out the privacy we have come to expect, with systems that monitor the digital books you search, the pages you read, how long you spend on various pages, and even what you write down in the margins. The Electronic Frontier Foundation has written a letter (PDF file) to Google CEO Eric Schmidt, demanding that Google take specific steps to protect your freedom to read privately.”...Electronic Frontier Foundation, July 23
