Today I set up my AIM account on AOL. I definitely found it more challenging than setting up this blog. I experimented with adding buddies by looking at the participants blog and adding a few of my co-workers.
I can imagine using IM at work with the people that I email with the most during the day -- possibly the associate deans. We already use email for quick back and forth if both people are at their desks. What's different with IM is that you can see whether the person is at their desk (or at least logged into their IM account).
I can also see personal uses for IM. I doubt I can convince my husband to use this method but it would work great for quick consultations!

We've used IM within the Information Technology division for a few years now. In a crowded cubicle world, it's a nice alternative to the phone. I wish my doctor used it!
I even used to chat with my kids, although they have now graduated to MySpace and Facebook and no longer use IM or email, for that matter. I have to send them a MySpace comment just to get them to check email. Shesh. :-)
